I’ve created this linocut for the Overwintering Project, a project set up by my friend and fellow printmaker Kate Gorringe -Smith. The project seeks to raise awareness for our migratory shorebirds and their habitat by inviting artists to help make them visible. The print will be exhibited with others as part of the project’s 10th anniversary at Latrobe Regional Gallery in March 2027.
The three colour reduction print is inspired by a visit to the shorebird habitat and a photo I took of the tidal flats on a walk to Stockyard Point in January 2026. We started the walk early in the morning at Lang Lang Foreshore Caravan Park and went along a clifftop track which opened out to mangrove shoreline after the tiny settlement of Jam Jerrup. It was early morning but the march flies were atrocious, which was probably why we had the shoreline to ourselves.
We didn’t see any great Great Knots on this visit but I remember there were some in this photo I took at Stockyard Point in 2020. My photo wasn’t detailed enough for reference for the Great Knot so I referred to a photo from Birdlife Australia’s website, by John Barkla.
